1 Connectivity + comms first to install

My Jio or Airtel Thanks — manage Indian SIM, recharge from abroad, eSIM provisioning. Whichever carrier you / your family uses

WhatsApp — the default for everything in India: restaurant reservations, Uber driver chat, hotel concierge, family group, doctor appointments. WhatsApp Pay works through UPI

TrueCaller — spam-call filter + caller-name lookup. Indian phone numbers without contacts are constant spam; TrueCaller is the standard defence

2 Money + UPI payments linked to Indian SIM + bank

BHIM — the official UPI app from NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India). Lightweight, no in-app ads. Best fallback when third-party apps lag

Google Pay India + PhonePe + Paytm — install all three. Different merchants accept different ones; UPI works the same

Your Indian bank's own app — HDFC MobileBanking, ICICI iMobile, SBI YONO, Axis Mobile, Kotak. Most NRE/NRO accounts force this for higher-value transactions

3 Transport cabs + trains + flights

Uber + Ola — install both. Coverage and pricing differ by city. Rapido for two-wheeler taxis (faster in tier-1 + tier-2 traffic)

IRCTC Rail Connect — the only legit way to book Indian Railways. Verifying the account requires Indian phone OTP + Aadhaar; do this before flying

MakeMyTrip or Cleartrip — flights, hotels, package deals. Often 5-15% cheaper than booking direct via airline / hotel website

4 Food + entertainment delivery + content

Zomato + Swiggy — install both. Different restaurants list on each. Both require Indian phone OTP for first order

BookMyShow — movies, plays, concerts, sports. Some events have offline-only tickets but the major ones are all here

JioCinema / Hotstar, Netflix India (use Indian login or VPN may be required for some content), Sony LIV, Zee5. India-only content: regional cinema, local sports

5 Govt + utility Aadhaar required

DigiLocker — official govt-issued document wallet. Stores Aadhaar, PAN, driving licence, vehicle registration. Accepted everywhere as digital ID

mAadhaar — Aadhaar from your phone. Required for biometric updates, address change. Setup needs you to be physically in India for OTP

UMANG + mParivahan + Passport Seva — single sign-on for 1500+ govt services, driving licence services, passport renewals. Worth installing once even if rarely used
