Best hospitals in India for foreigners — 2026 guide.

Updated May 2026

India hosts 700,000+ international medical tourists every year — and the math is straightforward: JCI-accredited hospitals, English-speaking doctors, world-class outcomes, at 70-90% lower cost than the US, UK, or Europe.

This guide is for foreigners — not NRIs — considering India for elective or specialist medical care. If you're an NRI looking at India hospitals for parents or yourself, see our NRI hospitals guide instead, which covers NRI-specific insurance pathways.

Medical visa — the practical bit.

The e-Medical Visa is the right category for treatment lasting more than 60 days or requiring multiple specialist visits. It's valid for 60 days from first entry and allows three entries.

What you need to apply

Apply at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Processing is typically 3-5 business days. Two attendants can apply for an e-Medical Attendant visa at the same time.

For shorter procedures (single LASIK, single dental visit, one specialist consultation): a regular e-Tourist Visa is sufficient.

⚠️
Don't try to use a tourist visa for major surgery. If immigration or the hospital catches a mismatch, they can deny treatment. The hospital won't admit you without the right visa category for the procedure being booked.

FAQ

Are Indian hospitals safe?

At JCI-accredited hospitals, yes — they meet the same Joint Commission International safety standards used by US hospitals. India has 40+ JCI-accredited facilities. Outcome data on common procedures (CABG, knee/hip replacement, LASIK, IVF) is comparable to top US centres. Infection control at the leading hospitals (Apollo, Fortis, Medanta, Narayana) is actually lower than many US community hospitals due to focused investment in international-grade ICU protocols.

Should I worry about water and food while recovering?

In-hospital: no — all leading hospitals use filtered water and Western-grade food prep. Out of hospital: stick to bottled or filtered water for the first week. Eat at hotel restaurants or established chains. Skip street food during recovery. Most international patient programs include a pre-vetted recovery hotel.

How do I avoid medical-tourism middleman scams?

Book directly through the hospital's International Patient department — every JCI-accredited hospital has one. Get prices in writing from the hospital, not from intermediaries. Be wary of any agency that won't tell you exactly which hospital they'll book you at. Reputable medical tourism facilitators do exist, but you can almost always get the same price by booking direct.

What about after-care once I return home?

Pre-discharge, ask the Indian hospital for: (1) a detailed discharge summary including procedure code, (2) digital copies of all scans/imaging in DICOM format, (3) the international protocol for any prescription medications (some India brand names won't match), and (4) a follow-up plan with your home-country specialist. Quality Indian hospitals will do video follow-ups for 6-12 months at no extra charge.

Which cities are easiest to navigate as a foreigner?

Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai are typically friendliest for first-time foreign patients — modern airports, English widely spoken, good private transport, mild climate. Mumbai and Delhi are bigger, busier, but have the broadest hospital choice. Kerala is increasingly popular for Ayurveda + recovery combined with allopathic treatment.
