Top Beaches in India.

Goa is where everyone starts. Kerala is where everyone should go next. The Andamans, Pondicherry, Karnataka coast — India's coastline is longer than it looks. Here's the bit worth flying back for.

The first beach trip back is always Goa, and that's fine — Goa earns its reputation. The second one should be Varkala, or Havelock, or Pondicherry, or one of the quieter Karnataka stretches. India has 7,500 kilometres of coast and Goa is barely the first hundred. This guide is the next 7,400.

Goa

Skip Calangute. Stay south.

South Goa

Palolem & Patnem

South Goa's twin crescents. Palolem for the buzz, Patnem for the silence. Both with serious shacks, both 30 minutes apart.

North Goa peaked culturally about a decade ago and now it's basically Bandra-by-the-sea — too many tourists, not enough character. South Goa from Palolem down to Agonda is where the spirit moved to. Stay 4-5 nights minimum. Skip the package operators; book a beach hut directly or stay in a heritage Portuguese villa inland.

North Goa · Calmer end

Ashvem & Mandrem

North Goa's still-quiet pair. Pine-shaded sand, fewer mass tourists, beach-shack culture intact.

If you want north Goa but you're allergic to Calangute, drive 40 minutes further north to Ashvem and Mandrem. Wider, cleaner, fewer concrete hotels. The shacks here have proper kitchens and the bartenders make actual cocktails. Stay at La Plage's beach huts or one of the heritage Portuguese homes that have been converted on the Mandrem side.

Kerala

Where Goa was 30 years ago — but with better food.

South Kerala · Cliff-side

Varkala

A cliff-top promenade looking out over the Arabian Sea. Yoga shalas, ayurveda, and the best beach sunsets on the west coast.

Varkala has a 200-foot red cliff with restaurants and yoga halls along the top, and a long stretch of beach below. The vibe is part-Goa-circa-2005, part-Israeli-traveller-route, part-ayurvedic retreat. Stay either on the cliff (Black Beach side) or at one of the inland heritage homes near the temple. Skip January peak; come in October or March for the best balance.

Trivandrum · Family-friendly

Kovalam

India's first international beach resort town. Three crescent beaches, the Leela on the headland, and Kerala's gentlest introduction.

Kovalam works for NRI families with elderly parents who want a beach holiday without effort. The infrastructure is set up; the beaches are clean and lifeguarded; the food is excellent. The Leela Kovalam is the marquee resort but Niraamaya and Vivanta both punch above their price. Skip if you want backpacker-Kerala — Varkala is your move.

Region 03

Andaman

India's Maldives. Most NRIs don't know it exists.

Neil Island · Andaman Sea

Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)

Smaller, slower, less crowded sister to Havelock. Three beaches to walk between, and the best snorkelling reef in the Andamans.

Neil is what Havelock was 15 years ago. Beach No. 1 (Bharatpur) for snorkelling, Beach No. 5 (Laxmanpur) for sunset, Beach No. 2 (Sitapur) for sunrise and silence. The whole island is 7 sq km — rentable by scooter in a morning. Stay 3-4 nights as part of a 7-night Andaman trip. Ferry from Havelock takes 1 hour.

Havelock Island

Radhanagar Beach & Havelock

India's only Asia-best-beach. White sand, turquoise water, and surprisingly mid-tier prices because Indian residents get domestic flight prices.

Radhanagar (Beach No. 7) on Havelock Island routinely makes Asia's best-beach lists. Fly to Port Blair, ferry to Havelock, settle in for a week. The water clarity rivals the Maldives at half the price. Best for couples or active travellers — diving, snorkelling, kayaking. Limited connectivity is part of the appeal.

Region 04

Pondicherry

French colonial bones, Tamil heart, surprisingly good beaches.

Pondicherry · French Quarter + coast

White Town & Auroville

Yellow-walled French heritage homes, Promenade beach at sunrise, Auroville's experimental community 15 minutes inland.

Pondi is more about vibe than beach — but the Promenade is lovely at sunrise, and Serenity Beach 10 minutes north is a clean swimming option. The reason to come is the architecture (yellow French colonial in White Town), the food (best French bakery in India), and Auroville inland. 3-4 nights is the sweet spot. Pair with Mahabalipuram for temple architecture if you have a week.

Region 05

Tamil Nadu Coast

Mahabalipuram's UNESCO temples meet the Bay of Bengal.

Mahabalipuram · 60 km south of Chennai

Mahabalipuram

7th-century Pallava temples carved straight into the Bay of Bengal coastline. UNESCO heritage and a properly underrated beach in one drive.

Most NRIs heading to Pondicherry skip Mahabalipuram — they shouldn't. The Shore Temple sits on the beach itself, and the rock-cut Pancha Rathas and Arjuna's Penance bas-relief are 10 minutes from a long, swimmable stretch of Bay of Bengal coast. Pair with Pondicherry as a 5-night Tamil Nadu coastal loop. Stay at Radisson Blu Resort Temple Bay or InterContinental for the seafront access.

Region 06

Karnataka Coast

Gokarna and Murdeshwar — Goa without the Goans.

Karnataka · Beach-trek combo

Gokarna

Five linked beaches — Om, Kudle, Half-Moon, Paradise, Gokarna — accessible only by foot or boat. The original backpacker secret, still mostly intact.

Gokarna is what Goa was before package tourism. Pilgrim town with five spectacular beaches strung along the cliffs. Walk the trail between them for the full effect. Stay at a beach hut on Kudle or Om for 4-5 nights. Connectivity is patchy (which is the point). Drive in from Mangalore or fly to Goa and drive 3 hours south.
