Most NRI India trips skip the museums. They shouldn't. India's institutional art and history scene in 2026 is the most-funded it has been since Independence — Kiran Nadar's collection at KNMA rivals the Tate's holdings of South Asian modern art, MAP Bangalore is the cleanest contemporary photography museum in Asia, and the CSMVS's restoration of Mumbai has set a new global standard for colonial-era museum revival. Plan one museum into every city visit.

CSMVS · the heart of Indian heritage.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya — formerly the Prince of Wales Museum. India's most-restored Indo-Saracenic public building.
Indian sculpture from the 4th century BCE forward. Indian miniature paintings (Mewar, Kangra, Pahari schools), the Pre-Columbian gallery, the natural-history wing, and a Museum Shop that doubles as one of Mumbai's best gift-buying stops. Allow 3 hours minimum. The audio guide is genuinely worth ₹150.

Byculla · Restored 2008
Dr Bhau Daji Lad · Mumbai's social-history archive.
A jewel-box museum inside Byculla's Veermata Jijabai Bhonsle Udyan. The single best place to understand how Mumbai actually became Mumbai. Restored Victorian interiors, decorative arts, the city's industrial-revolution-era artefacts. The newer contemporary art programme has hosted Atul Dodiya, Sudarshan Shetty, Anita Dube. Saturday afternoon = no crowds.

Delhi · the modern art capital.
If you're flying through Delhi for any reason, build a half-day at one of these. KNMA in particular has zero peers in the country.
Saket · Private museum
Kiran Nadar Museum of Art · KNMA.
India's most important post-Independence art collection, in a single private museum. World-class.
Founded by Kiran Nadar (Shiv Nadar/HCL fortune). Holdings rival the Tate's South Asian modern — MF Husain, Tyeb Mehta, SH Raza, FN Souza, Bhupen Khakhar, Nasreen Mohamedi, Arpita Singh, Gulammohammed Sheikh. Curatorial programme by Roobina Karode is genuinely the best in India. New permanent home (2025) at the Iconic Cultural Hub in Saket. Free entry.

Jaipur House · 1954
National Gallery of Modern Art · NGMA.
India's principal modern-art museum, housed in the former Jaipur royal residence. Ravi Varma's The Galaxy of Musicians, Tagore's painted oeuvre, Amrita Sher-Gil's complete works. The history of Indian modernism, told in chronological galleries. Pair with a walk through the Lodhi Gardens nearby.

Bangalore · the new-museum movement.
Two relatively new institutions putting Bangalore on the global cultural map. MAP especially is must-see.
Kasturba Road · Opened 2023
Museum of Art & Photography · MAP Bangalore.
Founded by Abhishek Poddar. India's first contemporary photography museum. 60,000+ works including a Raghu Rai retrospective room, Indian textile galleries, and a strong contemporary programme. The 5-storey building on Kasturba Road is itself an architectural moment. Café on the ground floor; museum shop is a sleeper hit.

Kolkata · the oldest collection.
India's oldest museum — and still one of the most extraordinary collections of South Asian art and archaeology.
Park Street · Established 1814
Indian Museum, Kolkata · India's oldest.
Founded 1814 by the Asiatic Society. The country's largest single museum collection — 100,000+ artefacts. Bharhut Stupa fragments. The Egyptian mummy. Fossils from across the subcontinent. The collection is older than every American museum and most European ones. Half-day minimum; air-conditioning patchy in summer; visit Oct-Feb.
