"Best NRI bank" isn't universal. A US-NRI prioritizes Wise / Schwab compatibility + zero-FX cards. A UK-NRI needs Faster Payments support. A UAE-NRI cares about AED corridor + zero-balance + Friday-Saturday weekend support. Below: the bank pick per major NRI corridor, with corridor-specific reasons.
🇺🇸 US NRIs (largest corridor)
Priorities: tax-efficient transfer with Wise / XE, Schwab brokerage compatibility, easy FATCA W-9 filing, ability to keep account active from US without branch visits.
Why NOT SBI as US-NRI primary: slow online support, branch dependency, complex KYC form mailing required.
🇬🇧 UK NRIs
Priorities: GBP FCNR rates, Faster Payments / SEPA support for inbound, low FX spread on GBP→INR conversion, easy direct debits to Indian accounts.
UK note: HSBC and Standard Chartered both close UK-NRI accounts within 1-2 years of move-back declaration. Don't rely on UK bank as bridge — open Indian account before / during move.
🇦🇪 UAE NRIs (Dubai / Abu Dhabi)
Priorities: AED corridor support, NIL minimum balance (no bonus salary requirement), Friday-Saturday operations (UAE weekend = Fri/Sat), instant remittance to India.
UAE-specific: avoid banks that require AED>5K monthly inflow — many UAE NRIs send savings home and have erratic inflows.
🇦🇺 Australia NRIs
Priorities: AUD FCNR, super (Australian Superannuation) repatriation guidance, longer time-zone gap support, ASIC tax treaty awareness.
Australian specific: pension fund (super) is locked until age 60 — don't bank-shop around the assumption you can move it. Use NRE for current-account savings + FCNR for any AUD lump sum.
🇨🇦 Canada NRIs
Priorities: CAD FCNR, RRSP / RESP integration awareness (these stay in Canada), TFSA tax treatment when moving back.
Canada specific: RRSP and TFSA stay in Canada when you move back — don't try to repatriate Canadian retirement accounts. They earn tax-free in Canada via DTAA if you become Indian resident.
🇸🇬 Singapore NRIs
Priorities: SGD FCNR, CPF (Central Provident Fund) preservation guidance, easy India trip coordination (short flights make in-person branch visits feasible).
Singapore specific: CPF is locked until 55+; don't plan around early withdrawal. SGD FCNR is reasonable but options are narrower than USD/GBP/EUR.
🇩🇪🇪🇺 EU NRIs (Germany / Netherlands / Switzerland / others)
Priorities: EUR FCNR rates, SEPA support, German / Swiss tax treaty awareness, often longer NRI residency before move-back (5-10+ years).
EU-NRI note: long residencies → check if you've triggered Indian "deemed resident" status; some country tax treaties (Germany) are stricter than US/UK.
