First Issue · Welcome
Most NRI finance content is written by people who never made the move.
28 years on Wall Street. Citi, JP Morgan, Nomura, Barclays. Came back to Mumbai in 2024 expecting to manage the transition like a deal. I was wrong. Tax code, banking system, FEMA rules, offshore products pitched at every dinner — eighteen months of mistakes before I understood any of it.
This newsletter is what I wish someone had handed me on day one. Every Monday morning, IST. Twelve sections: rule changes, one sharp take, remittance brief, India macro, student brief, a trap to avoid, the best from the site, reader mail, lifestyle, the cricket kid worth watching, one tactical move, a closing prompt.

01What Changed
Three rule shifts NRIs need to clock this week.
One from the tax department, one from the payment rails, one from the RBI.
Tax · India
Section 6(1A) takes effect 1 April 2026
The Income Tax Act 2025 recodifies the deemed-residency rule first introduced in Finance Act 2020. Indian citizens with ₹15 lakh+ Indian-source income who aren't tax-resident anywhere else can be classified as RNOR in India, even with zero days spent here.
→ UAE, Monaco, Bermuda, Bahamas, Cayman residents specifically affected. A current UAE TRC strengthens your position but isn't a perfect shield. Full explainer →
Payments · UAE
UPI merchant acceptance now live across UAE retailers
UAE's Aani instant rail has gone live at major merchants via Mashreq's NeoPay and Network International's terminals. Indian visitors can scan-and-pay at Dubai retailers using their UPI app on an Indian SIM. Bank-to-bank P2P AED-INR via Aani-UPI remains on the NPCI International roadmap, not yet deployed.
→ Pay-at-merchant is solved. Sending money home from a UAE bank to an Indian bank still routes via Wise / bank wires / corridor specialists for now.
Banking · India
RBI holds repo at 5.25%, signals neutral stance
The April 2026 MPC meeting kept the repo rate unchanged for the second consecutive meeting after the December 2025 cut. The government's FY26 GDP estimate was revised up to 7.6 percent (RBI's own projection: 7.4 percent). Inflation projected at ~2.0 percent for FY26.
→ For NRE FD bookers: rates likely flat through Q2. Real yields at multi-year highs (NRE FDs ~7% against FY26 inflation averaging ~2%). Lock in 2–3-year tenors before the next MPC if you've been waiting.
02The Take
If you're moving back to India, don't land in November.
The single biggest mistake returnees make is treating the landing date as a logistics decision. It's a tax decision worth lakhs.
RNOR (Resident but Not Ordinarily Resident) is the window where your foreign income stays tax-exempt in India. Most valuable financial window of your entire return. Determined almost entirely by your arrival date.
Land in August → nearly three full financial years of RNOR. Land in December → you've burned eight months of year one before the tax clock starts. For a returnee with US 401(k) withdrawals, Roth conversions, UK ISA exits, or UAE gratuity coming in, the gap is twenty to forty lakhs of avoided Indian tax.
Returnees plan the move around school calendars, job start dates, and lease ends. Nobody at HR, no real estate agent, no school admissions office is thinking about RNOR.
Plan your landing month the way you'd plan a stock sale. The numbers are bigger.

03The Remittance Brief
Is it a good week to send money to India?
USD-INR closed at 95.39 on Friday. Here's what that means for the dirhams, pounds, and dollars sitting in your account.
USD / INR · Friday close
95.39 +1.2% MTD
GBP / INR · Friday close
128.18 +0.6% MTD
AED / INR · Friday close
25.53 +1.2% MTD
Direction. Rupee weakened through May on Iran tensions, crude, FII selling. For NRIs sitting on USD/GBP/AED, a moment of relative strength. Whether it holds depends on geopolitics and oil — out of your hands.
What to do. Recurring remittance (parents, school fees, EMI)? Don't time it. Move what you need now, keep doing it monthly. The cost of "I'll wait for a better rate" historically beats the upside.
Which corridor wins this week.
- USD-INR · under $5K — Wise. Lowest spread, fees upfront.
- USD-INR · $5K–$25K — Wise wins on rate; XE and Remitly tighten. Compare.
- USD-INR · above $25K — HDFC / ICICI / Kotak bank wires with pre-negotiated rates compete. Per-txn fee thins out at scale.
- AED-INR · under 50K AED — Wise. (UPI-Aani P2P is roadmap, not live.)
- GBP-INR · any size — Wise. Unless your UK bank offers free international transfers (rare).
Lump sums sitting in foreign currency? Dollar-cost average. 25% now, 25% in two months, 25% in four, the rest in six. You give up the home-run rate but avoid the disaster rate — the bigger risk for most NRIs.
→ Live FX across 8 providers: fx-compare.
04The India Brief
India is still the fastest-growing major economy in the world.
7.6 percent FY26 estimate, $35 billion in remittances per quarter, real yields at multi-year highs. The macro picture matters for what you do with your money.
Growth. India's FY26 GDP estimate revised up to 7.6% (government; RBI: 7.4%). Per IMF April 2026 WEO — China 4.4%, US 2.3%, UK 1.3%, eurozone 1.1%. India is in a league of one. Q3 FY26 printed 7.8%, fastest in seven quarters. Why it matters: long-term case for INR-denominated assets (Indian equity, NRE FDs, MFs, real estate) holds. Where you allocate matters more than when you convert.
Remittance. India took in ~$35B in Q1 FY26 — still the world's largest recipient. You're not just sending money home, you're holding up the balance of payments.
Risk flag. Iran-Israel tensions, crude up. India imports ~89% of its crude. April RBI commentary flagged this. Crude above $95 sustained = continued rupee weakness — good for converting in, bad for repatriating out.
The thing nobody talks about. FY26 inflation averaged ~2.0% (April 2026 print: 3.48%; October 2025 hit a record-low 0.25%). NRE FDs at 7% against ~2% inflation = best real-yield window since 2014. Lock 2–3-year tenors before the next rate move.
05The Student Brief
Your kid is flying home for the summer. Here's what to fix before they land.
May to August is peak summer break for Indian students at US, UK, and Canadian universities. Most arrive without thinking about banking, taxes, or cash flow. Their parents arrive without thinking about it either.
For parents. UPI international from the US isn't live (NPCI rollout, US not on the list yet). Cleanest path: Wise or Remitly into their Indian savings, or NRO if you opened one as an NRI minor. Don't put large sums on credit cards for them to draw — POS FX markup is 2–3.5%, plus another 2% if they tap "pay in USD" at the terminal.
For students. Three pre-flight tasks: (1) GPay/PhonePe linked to your Indian SBI/HDFC/ICICI account, (2) free Indian SIM (Jio/Airtel) on Aadhaar before the old one expires, (3) tell your US bank you're traveling so they don't freeze your card at the first Mumbai ATM. Without UPI in India, you'll feel like a foreigner.
Internship tax. Rupee-paid Indian internship = Indian-source income, taxable in India regardless of residency. US tax residents file it on their 1040 too. India-US treaty gives a foreign tax credit — no double tax, but filing complexity goes up. Worth a 30-min cross-border CPA call before day one.
Health gap. US university insurance often doesn't cover off-US incidents. Indian summer travel insurance: ₹1,500–3,000 for 90 days (ICICI Lombard, HDFC Ergo). Worth it.
Cash. 90-day summer = ₹40K–80K depending on city. Send as one Wise transfer at the start — beats weekly small transfers on cumulative FX cost.
06The Trap
The Dubai pitch that costs NRIs $250,000.
Five product names, one identical trap. If anyone in DIFC is selling you a 25-year "wealth-building plan," walk away.
RL360. Friends Provident. Zurich International. Hansard. Generali. Five offshore savings plans, pushed hard at GCC NRIs by commission-driven advisors. The single biggest wealth-destruction machine in the region.
The math: 80–100% surrender penalty in the first two years · 2–3% annual fee drag through stacked layers · advisor pockets 4–7% commission upfront. (Real friend, 11 years in RL360, trailed the S&P 500 by a quarter million dollars. Different friend, same story, every time.)
If you hold one: get a fee-only adviser — not someone pitching a replacement — to model surrender vs. continuation. Most of the time, eating the penalty and moving to low-cost ETFs is the right call.
If your advisor works on commission, they're not your advisor.

08Reader Mail
A question from a reader in Chennai.
This week's question came from someone who moved back from the US in 2016 and wants to open an FCNR account today.
The Question
"Can I open an FCNR account after having moved back to India in April 2016 as an American citizen with OCI?"
— F.B., Chennai
Short answer: No. One of the most common confusions I see.
Why. FCNR accounts require NRI status under FEMA — not under the Income Tax Act. Two different residency tests. FEMA residency flips the day you physically land in India with intent to stay. You became FEMA-resident in April 2016. Almost a decade past that window.
What to use instead: an RFC (Resident Foreign Currency) account. Holds USD inside India. Interest tax-free during RNOR, taxable after. The path for any US citizen with OCI living in India who wants to bring foreign currency in.
Bigger lesson: FEMA residency (FCNR / NRE / NRO eligibility) and Income Tax residency (RNOR / ROR) are two different clocks. Most NRIs blur them. Don't.

09The Lifestyle Note
Four Mumbai stops I drag every visiting NRI to.
Bombay rewards the slow-walking afternoon an NRI on a quick trip never makes time for.
↑ Bombay · Photo: Unsplash
Fort to Colaba, all reachable by black-and-yellow cab.
Yazdani Bakery (Fort · since 1953)
Cawasji Patel Street. Wooden chairs, marble tables, ceiling fans turning since Eisenhower was president. Brun maska is exactly what you remember if you grew up here. Chai costs forty rupees. Open Mon–Sat from 7am. Walk in early.
Britannia & Co. (Ballard Estate · since 1923)
The Parsi berry pulao every visiting NRI's host eventually orders. The legendary Boman Kohinoor passed in 2020 — his son runs it now, recipe unchanged, queue on the pavement by 1pm. Lunch only, closed Sundays. Order mutton berry pulao + caramel custard.
Bademiya (Colaba · since 1946)
Street stall behind the Taj, open till 2am. Post-flight or post-match kebab roll grade. Seekh roll is canonical; chicken bhuna in rumali is the order if you've been before. Plastic chairs, cars honking, charcoal smell at midnight — the Bombay tourists try and fail to find.
The Bar at The Table (Fort)
Most serious cocktail programme in South Mumbai. Small room, no view, no pretension — excellent drinks by people who care. The Table upstairs serves some of the best food in the city. Walk in late after Bademiya. Closes 1am.
If you're flying in anyway, off-cricket route: Ladakh (June–August, only window), Meghalaya root bridges (July–August), Uttarakhand hills (Mussoorie/Landour, June–July). All covered at the travel hub.
10The Kid You Should Be Watching
A 15-year-old in a Rajasthan Royals jersey is rewriting Indian cricket.
Last time a teenager generated this much heat was Sachin in '89.
↑ Stadium under lights · Photo: Unsplash
Vaibhav Suryavanshi. He's 15. Made his IPL debut for Rajasthan Royals in 2025 at age 14 — youngest player in the tournament's history. A few weeks in, he hit a 35-ball century — second-fastest in IPL history, fastest by an Indian, ever.
IPL 2026: 579 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 236.33 — highest in the top five run-scorers on the table. Earlier this year he led India U19 to World Cup glory with 175 off 80 in the final.
NRIs who grew up watching Sachin's 1989 debut should not miss this one. If you can catch a Rajasthan Royals match — Sawai Mansingh in Jaipur, the home ground — go.

11One Move This Week
Check the nominee on your old NRE FDs.
Most NRIs opened NRE fixed deposits years ago and never updated the nominee. Spouse, parents, or kids who were listed in 2015 may not be the right person today. If you die without a current nominee, the FD goes through probate and your family loses 6–12 months of access.
Takes 5 minutes online for HDFC, ICICI, Kotak, and SBI. Do it tonight.
