Indian SIM + GPay — set it up during your next India visit
The simplest UPI setup if you're going to India anyway. Get an Indian SIM (Jio, Airtel, Vi prepaid or postpaid). Install GPay India / PhonePe / BHIM during the trip. Link to NRO/NRE/savings. You're set for future visits — and most apps work from abroad over Wi-Fi as long as the SIM is in the device.
What this route is
Keep an Indian SIM active (Jio, Airtel, Vi prepaid international roaming OR a postpaid number you maintain). Install GPay India, PhonePe, or BHIM on your phone during the same trip. Link to NRO/NRE/savings. You're now set for any future visit — and most apps work over Wi-Fi from abroad too, as long as the SIM is in the device.
- Cheapest ongoing option once set up
- Need to activate during India visit (or arrange via family)
- Indian SIM dormancy rules: typically deactivate after 90 days of no usage
- Budget for occasional roaming charges or quick reactivation calls
The 30-minute India-visit setup
- Day 1 of your trip: walk into a Jio / Airtel / Vi store. Get a prepaid or postpaid SIM. Postpaid (~₹200/month) is what most NRIs use because it doesn't deactivate.
- Same day: on a phone with the Indian SIM in it, install GPay India (via Indian Play Store / iOS Apple ID), PhonePe, or BHIM. Bypass any "GPay isn't available in your region" issues by switching to an India-based Google account.
- Link your NRO/NRE via account number + IFSC, or via the debit card. UPI sets up automatically.
- Test it: pay any roadside vendor / kirana store ₹10. Confirm the rail works end-to-end.
- Take the SIM back abroad. Most apps continue to work on Wi-Fi.
Keeping the SIM alive while abroad
Postpaid (recommended): ~₹200/month. Never goes dormant as long as you pay. Best for long-term abroad.
Prepaid: Cheaper but goes dormant after 90 days of zero usage. Reactivate by recharging or, in some cases, a KYC call. Higher friction.
International roaming: Optional. Most UPI apps work on Wi-Fi without active roaming. But OTP SMSes for some bank flows need roaming on — budget for an occasional pack.
