Documents first โ Aadhaar, PAN, and the licence you need before everything else.
The first 30 days in India are administrative. Without Aadhaar and PAN updated for your resident status, you cannot open a demat account, complete mutual fund Know Your Customer (KYC), or register property. Get these done in sequence, not all at once.
Why document sequencing matters
The instinct is to do everything in parallel. Resist it. Aadhaar update unlocks everything downstream: bank KYC, PAN update, demat account opening, income tax filings. Try to jump ahead to a demat account before Aadhaar is updated and you will hit a wall at the KYC step โ every depository participant now requires Aadhaar-based verification.
The correct sequence is: Aadhaar update โ PAN category change โ bank KYC update โ demat and mutual fund KYC. PAN update alone takes 10โ15 business days from submission. Reserve equity investments and property registration until your PAN reflects Resident Indian status โ your bank may otherwise apply Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) at the wrong rate on your income, and Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) KYC will be blocked.
Aadhaar address update (Day 1โ3) โ PAN category change via NSDL (Day 3โ5, then wait 10โ15 days) โ Bank KYC update (once PAN clears) โ Demat + MF KYC โ Driving licence conversion โ Health insurance (buy immediately, no sequencing required).
Aadhaar: update, don't re-enroll
Most returning NRIs already have an Aadhaar from before they left India. You do not need to re-enroll. What you need to update is your mobile number (if it changed) and your address (to your current India address). These are two separate updates โ mobile via OTP, address via document submission.
Method 1 โ mAadhaar app Face Auth: No centre visit required. Download the mAadhaar app, complete face authentication, and update your address by uploading a supporting document (utility bill, rental agreement, bank statement). This is the fastest route if your biometrics match cleanly.
Method 2 โ Aadhaar enrolment centre walk-in: Locate your nearest enrolment centre at uidai.gov.in. Bring original passport and address proof. The correction request is submitted on-site and processed within 5โ7 business days. You receive an SMS confirmation when the update is live.
Aadhaar is required for: bank KYC, income tax returns, demat account KYC, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) subsidy linkage, and SEBI KYC for mutual funds. Every one of these will be faster once your address reflects your current India residence.
Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders are eligible for Aadhaar only after 182 days of continuous stay in India. If you land and immediately try to get Aadhaar as an OCI holder, it will be rejected. Plan your document sequence around this window โ use your passport as identity proof for any steps you need to complete in the interim.
PAN: switch from NRI to Resident status
Your Permanent Account Number (PAN) does not change. You do not get a new card. What changes is the category field on your PAN record โ from NRI to Resident Indian. This update is made via Form CSF (Change/Correction in PAN Data), submitted through either the NSDL portal (onlineservices.nsdl.com) or the UTIITSL portal (pan.utiitsl.com).
Documents required: proof of India address (Aadhaar, utility bill, or bank statement โ which is why Aadhaar comes first), copy of passport (for identity), and a recent passport-size photograph. The form is submitted online; you pay a nominal processing fee of โน110 (including GST).
Turnaround time: 10โ15 business days from submission. You can track the status using your acknowledgement number on the respective portal. A new physical PAN card is issued with the same number but updated category.
Until your PAN reflects Resident Indian status, some banks may continue treating you as an NRI for TDS purposes โ or worse, apply the higher TDS rate (20%) applicable to non-filers. Submit the Form CSF as soon as your Aadhaar address is updated. Do not wait until you "get around to it."
OCI card update: the 3-month rule
If you hold an OCI card and your passport has been renewed or reissued since the OCI was issued, you are legally required to update the OCI within three months of the new passport being issued. This is not optional โ failure to update is technically a violation of the OCI terms.
The update is done through the e-OCI 2026 digital system at ociservices.gov.in. Upload the new passport bio-data page, the existing OCI booklet or card, and a recent photograph. Processing typically takes 3โ6 weeks. You can use the e-gate at Indian international airports with your e-OCI status once it is updated.
If your OCI was issued on a passport that is still valid, no update is required yet. Check the passport number printed on your OCI card against your current passport. If they match, you are compliant. If they do not match, submit the update immediately โ before the three-month window closes.
Driving licence: convert at your RTO, no test required
India permits direct conversion of a valid foreign driving licence without a written test or practical driving examination. You apply at the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in the jurisdiction of your India address.
Valid foreign driving licence ยท Notarised English translation if the licence is not in English ยท Form 4 (application for fresh licence, available at the RTO counter) ยท Passport with valid India visa or OCI card ยท Aadhaar as address proof ยท Two recent passport-size photographs ยท RTO fee (varies by state, typically โน200โโน500).
Processing time: 7โ10 working days at most RTOs in major cities. Some RTOs in Maharashtra have moved to same-day processing for foreign licence conversions โ call ahead to confirm. Your India licence will be issued in the same vehicle categories as your foreign licence (e.g., if your US licence covers motorcycles, the India conversion covers the equivalent category).
Keep your original foreign driving licence after conversion. It remains valid in the country that issued it, and you will need it if you drive there during future visits. Some RTOs ask to retain the original โ you are entitled to a notarised copy if they do. Assert this.
Health insurance: fill the gap on Day 1
Your international health insurance policy โ whether through your employer abroad or a personal expat plan โ typically lapses the moment you become a tax resident in India. The exact trigger date varies by policy, but most international plans explicitly exclude coverage once you establish permanent residence in a new country.
Do not wait for Aadhaar and PAN to sort health insurance. You can buy an Indian health policy on the day you land. Indian insurers do not require Aadhaar or PAN at point of purchase โ a passport and a payment method are sufficient. You will update KYC details later.
Starting point: A โน10 lakh family floater covers most hospitalisation costs in tier-1 cities for routine procedures. Upgrade to โน25โ50 lakh if you or an immediate family member has a history of cardiac disease, cancer, diabetes with complications, or any condition that historically leads to high-cost interventions. The premium difference between โน10L and โน25L coverage is smaller than most people expect โ often โน4,000โโน8,000 more per year for a 35-year-old.
Reputable options to compare: Star Health (broad network, strong claim settlement), Niva Bupa (formerly Max Bupa, competitive premiums), HDFC ERGO (strong technology and app experience). All three allow policy purchase without waiting for KYC completion.
Disclose every pre-existing condition accurately at the time of purchase. Non-disclosure โ even an honest omission โ gives the insurer grounds to reject a claim. If you had hypertension, a past surgery, or any condition requiring ongoing medication abroad, declare it. The insurer will apply a waiting period (typically 2โ4 years) before covering that condition, but the policy remains valid for everything else. A rejected claim because of non-disclosure is far worse than a waiting period.
