Nobody goes to the coast in July, which is the entire point

Goa in July is close to empty. A good share of the beach shacks come down for the season, the water is not swimmable on the open beaches, and room rates fall by half or more. What replaces it is a coastline doing something dramatic, villages that belong to the people who live in them again, and a quality of green that the December crowd never sees.

This is the trip for a second or third visit home rather than a first. If you have already done the Goa everyone does, this is the other one.

πŸ–οΈ Further down
Patnem, Kaup and Maravanthe β€” the Konkan coast south of the crowds

Patnem in south Goa is the quiet counterpart to Palolem next door and stays pleasant even off-season. Further south into Karnataka, Maravanthe is the stretch where the highway runs with the sea on one side and the Souparnika river on the other β€” in monsoon light it is the best road in the state. Kaup, near Udupi, has the lighthouse and the black rock, and almost nobody on it in July.

Treat all three as places to look at rather than swim at during the monsoon. The currents along this coast in July are genuinely dangerous and local flags are not decorative.

🍽️ What to eat
Monsoon is the coast's best eating and its worst fishing

The irony of the Konkan in July: the food is superb and the fish is mostly frozen. Monsoon is the trawling ban β€” roughly June to the end of July along much of the west coast β€” which is exactly why the season belongs to everything else. Kokum, raw mango, jackfruit, the whole vegetarian half of Goan and Mangalorean cooking that normally plays second to the catch.

In Kerala, the same months are when Ayurvedic treatment centres run their main season, on the reasoning that the humidity is when the body takes treatment best. Whether or not you believe the theory, it is the one time of year the good places have space.

Book refundable, and watch the one charge nobody checks

July is the month to book refundable rates even where it costs a little more. Domestic flights into Goa, Mangalore and Kochi are routinely delayed or diverted in heavy weather, and a non-refundable hotel night on the far end of a cancelled sector is money gone.

The charge nobody checks: most Indian hotel and travel sites will quote you in your home currency if they detect a foreign card. That convenience costs roughly 3% against the mid-market rate. Pay in rupees.

If you are sending money ahead for a longer stay, the gap between a bank wire and a specialist is the single biggest number in the trip β€” on $10,000 it is about β‚Ή14,000.
